Phases of Medical, Chiropractic,
and Physical Therapy Care
There are four distinct phases of treatment that each patient can choose to receive. Each phase gives separate and distinct benefits to the patient, and each takes a different time frame to accomplish, depending on the initial patient condition at the time treatment begins.
Acute or relief phase of care
This phase of care is typically the initial stage because it is the phase in which the patient enters the office in some degree of pain. This phase can be characterized by swelling, lack of motion, muscle spasm, or just plain feeling lousy. It is the stage in which symptoms predominate the patient's concern. Treatment during this stage can consist of gentle chiropractic adjustments of the spine and various forms of therapy to reduce pain and swelling. This stage can last a few days to a few weeks. Treatment is normally at its highest level with many conditions requiring multiple visits each week.
Corrective phase of care
The corrective phase begins when the pain has significantly been reduced. This stage is characterized by the patient feeling like they are able to resume normal activities. This is a very important time because if the patient tries to resume all activities, it is common for the pains to increase again. This occurs because the condition has not yet been fully stabilized. Treatment is geared towards reducing muscle spasm and re-educating those same muscles into their normal tone and length. Chiropractic adjustments increase spinal mobility so more normal function may return to the spine and nervous system. This phase of care can take a few weeks with very minor conditions to months in more severe conditions. The frequency of care can still be multiple visits per week, but perhaps not as frequent as in the acute or relief phase.
Strengthening phase of care
This phase of care is characterized by either significant reduction or elimination of pain, and continued stabilization. The frequency of visits decreases, while more rehabilitative exercises are introduced. Our goal, in this stage, is to strengthen the soft tissue that surrounds the affected spinal segments so that proper function becomes more consistent. When normal motion and strength are restored, there is less chance of arthritis or degenerative changes to occur later, or for the area to be re-injured.
Maintenance or supportive care
Many patients chose to continue chiropractic care for ongoing wellness and health maintenance after treatment for their injuries has been completed. The benefits of continuing care are well documented for maintenance of strength and mobility, injury prevention, and general health.
It should be noted that wellness care is outside the scope of accident treatment. Payment for these services may be covered by insurance or private payment. This type of treatment can be arranged through our sister company, First Care Chiropractic, or other chiropractic offices in the area.
